The term “cloud-based computing” is simply a metaphor, with the cloud representing the Internet.
The addition of the Internet to the equation is what differentiates this model from the traditional “on-premise” model, where software is installed at the dealership, on the dealer’s servers.
Cloud-based computing is not a new concept. Its popularity began to grow some years back with the advent of the Internet, and it became known as the ASP model, for Application Service Provider.
With more recent technological advances, a new term gained popularity: SaaS, for Software as a Service. This new term focuses more on the mode in which software is offered than on the software itself, underlining the fact that it is a comprehensive service that covers many aspects of software delivery that the client was previously forced to address.
Currently, the model has begun to be called
on-demand and
cloud-based computing or simply
cloud computing, terms popularized by major players in the segment, such as Google and Amazon.
